Here in the Kowhai Room we care for children from 3 months-2.5 years. We provide a safe, trusting and well-resourced environment full of fun, laughter and love which helps to create a great sense of wellbeing and belonging for our infants and toddlers. Establishing and maintaining nurturing relationships with our tamariki and their whanau is key in our role as teachers for this precious age group. We strive to achieve a smooth transition from home to centre for our infants, toddlers and their whanau with a home like environment.
We have a strong Pikler and RIE (Resources for Infant Educarer) essence where we follow children’s natural development without interference and where children can move freely in a safe and comforting environment. We pride ourselves on the relationships we form with children and their whanau. Our daily communication with parents/whanau ensures we are meeting the needs and aspirations of each individual child and their family. We value one on one interactions with our infants and toddlers, and having low child/teacher ratios allows many of these magical moments for all of our tamariki.
In the Kowhai Room, to help assist our tamariki with their communication we incorporate our 3rd official language, New Zealand Sign Language. NZSL is a great non-verbal communication tool for tamariki to get across their wants, needs and emotions until they are confident and ready to use verbal-communication. We use the signs alongside verbal communication with our tamariki and encourage them to use both forms when communicating.
